Humans are very much like wolves. We live in packs (extended families, tribes, clans, etc) and hunt socially. How do you think your dog joined your family so easily? It makes sense for a predator to conserve energy whenever possible. Why do you think your cat sleeps so much?
A shepherd is a slickly re-engineered, lazy wolf. Wolf 2.0. Many (most?) human institutions work like this, when you start looking. Think of those classic ‘good shepherds’, Health Insurance Companies. Or government and its citizens (or subjects), for that matter (study history and learn). Or employers and their employees, stock brokers and their customers, con artists and marks, armies and soldiers, corporations and their shareholders…
Actually, now that I think of it, The Lord is my shepherd.
Going to have to ponder this further. More later.
